With just a week to go before the 2020 GRAMMY Awards, the Recording Academy has made a shocking change at the top. Deborah Dugan has been removed as President and CEO of the organization after new concerns were brough to the attention of the board.

Dugan ascended to the role of President in August of 2019, and the 62nd Annual GRAMMY Awards were scheduled to be her first. It was a noted change for the Recording Academy, with Dugan replacing former President Neil Portnow, who ran into trouble with comments about women needing to “step up” for better representation at the awards.

“In light of concerns raised to the Recording Academy Board of Trustees, including a formal allegation of misconduct by a senior female member of the Recording Academy team, the Board has placed [Dugan] on administrative leave, effective immediately,” reads an official statement obtained by Variety. “The Board has also retained two independent third-party investigators to conduct independent investigations of the allegations.”

Board chair for the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason, Jr. has been named interim president and CEO “pending the conclusion of the investigation.”

“The Board determined this action to be necessary in order to restore the confidence of the Recording Academy’s Membership, repair Recording Academy employee morale, and allow the Recording Academy to focus on its mission of serving all music creators,” the statement concludes.

Speculation has already run wild on the reasons for Dugan’s removal from her post, with some suggesting that potential changes from Dugan were too much, too fast for the older segment of the Recording Academy. Other sources hint at much more serious allegations to warrant a shake up like this before music’s biggest night.

The 2020 GRAMMY Awards happen live from Los Angeles on Sunday January 26 at 8PM ET on CBS. You can follow along with all of RADIO.COM’s coverage here.
