Austin Monfort and Chantal Melanson first met at a country bar in Las Vegas and neither of them could have guessed that would be the start of their at first tragic, and then extremely beautiful love story.

Melanson denied Monfort upon first interaction because he was not wearing cowboy boots to a country bar. Monfort then worked up the courage to talk to her one more time and the two ended up hitting it off, dancing the night away, and even exchanging numbers.

They were both in town for the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival and made plans to meet up during the concert the next day. Melanson left her girlfriends and went to hang out with Monfort during Jason Aldean's headlining set.

This picture has so much meaning behind it, we were strangers, I decided we needed a picture, less an a hour later we were in a mass shooting. I’m so blessed that Austin walked into my life when he did. _________ October 1st 2017. Woke up, got ready and then headed to the last day of Route 91 festival. I went by myself while my friends went shopping for a bit. Austin who I had met the previous night met up with me. We tried to go as close to the stage as we could for Jason Aldean. . The rest is a blur. Bullets we’re flying and we were all trying to get out of there alive. I’m so thankful that Austin never left my side that night. He’s my hero. He kept me calm, took my hand and told me we were running to safety while bullets raining down. . He’s from California and me Canada. Little did I know this was just the beginning of our story! 2 years later, lots of traveling we are engaged, I’m moving to California and we are planning a wedding. . . . . . #honor58 #route91harvest #route91strong #route91survivor #vegasstrong #countrystrong #route91 #route91survivors #route91family #route91harvestfestival #countrylove #lovewins #lasvegasstrong #faith #soulmate #myhero #countrymusic #bloggersunder5k #lasvegasshooting #prayforvegas #58emptybarstools #californiablogger #sandiegoblogger #doublepost

Nearing the end of his set is when a gunman began firing from the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay hotel and mass chaos ensued. Both concertgoers at first though the loud noise was only fireworks until panic began to start in the crowd and everyone understood it was gunshots.

Monfort said he instinctively felt compelled to protect Melanson because she left her friends to be with him and he immediately grabbed her hand to find an exit. His only thought was to remain calm and get both of them out safely. Even though the two just met the night before, Monfort felt a strong connection to help and protect her no matter what.

The two made it out unharmed and stayed with each other for the rest of the night before having to say their goodbyes in the morning. They ended up keeping in touch over the next few months and through a shared tragedy came a great love story.

Monfort proposed in March 2019 and the couple was supposed to get married this month, but had to postpone their plans due to the coronavirus.

Less than 24hours of meeting each other we were in a mass shooting together and he never left my side. Almost two years later, living in two different country, we have a fairytale love story -- . Friday March 8th we headed to our favourite place to unwind Laguna Beach -- we got ourselves a cute hotel room and we really didn’t make any plans other than spend time together and relax. It was a windy and chilly day by the water but we bundled up, Austin even wearing cowboys on the beach. Once we got down to thousand steps beach Austin gave me a hug. Right away I could feel his heart beating out of his chest. I asked him if everything was okay? . That’s when he looked at me got down on one knee, reached in his cowboy boot and made me the happiest girl in the world -- . We sat on the beach, cracked open a beer and soaked it all in -- the night was followed by an amazing dinner and celebration drinks at our favourite rooftop bar @skyloftoc . . #longdistancerelationship #isaidyes #engaged #fiance #heasked #howheasked #proposalstory #lagunabeachproposal #followforfollow #proposal #lovestory #howwemet #ourstory #ourlovestory #huffpostido #followourlovestory #lovejourney #followus #couplegoals #coupleinfluencer #influencer #k1visa #k1fiancevisa #sandiegoblogger #fiancevisa #route91strong #route91family #route91harvest #route91survivors #tragedytolove

You can follow their amazing love story on their Instagram page @tragedytolove.

Our wedding was suppose to be Friday. Although we didn’t have the wedding we still wanted to celebrate us. We had a wonderful evening date in the backyard, with a few of our wedding signs, a wonderful dinner and champagne -- -- . Our hearts go out to everyone who had to postpone their weddings during covid, so much planning goes into the special day and it’s heartbreaking to have to cancel such a special day.
