Last fall, Major DeCrans departed for his third army deployment and this time he traveled to Kuwait. Even though he has been in the military for 20 years, this deployment was the most difficult because it was the first time he had to leave his kids at home.

DeCrans commented on how the eight hour time difference made it extremely hard to talk to them in real-time because once the kids were up and ready for school, he was already in a secure building with no way to communicate.

DeCrans' wife, Cierra, said things were also very challenging at home and with everything going on, she could not make a video of the kids each day to send to her husband.

Fortunately, the family's communication problem seemed to improve when they received a Ring doorbell camera last holiday season. One day Cierra's dad told his grandkids, "Why don't you guys go tell hi to your dad, you can use this function and he can see it over (in Kuwait)." That function on the doorbell camera blew their minds and while they could not see their dad physically, the two kids could leave messages to tell him about their day.

The kids began to make the messages part of their daily routine, and their dad could watch the videos on his computer and then respond later.

Cierra loved the idea because she said it was one thing the kids could control and they did not need any help to send the messages.

Major DeCrans returned from his deployment late this summer and is now retired after 20 years of service. He and the family have since shared the videos with Ring and inspired other families to stay in touch this holiday season. #GoodVibes
