Chicago rideshare tax hikes take effect today.

  • The point of the new tax is to help ease congestion downtown.
  • Prior to today, the fee you paid was $.72 per ride but today it will cost single riders three dollars per ride downtown and will go down to $1.25 if you are part of a shared ride.
  • This new fee runs from 6 am - 10 pm.
  • The new tax is expected to raise about $40 million for the city of Chicago that will help close that $838 million dollar deficit. The mayor hopes the new tax law will encourage users to ride public transportation instead.

  • As for Nicole and Keith, their home in Australia is under threat but so far it hasn't caught fire. They say they made their pledge public to encourage and inspire others to make donations as well saying anything helps.
