There Were Many Tributes to Kobe Bryant During the Oscars

What's Up Chicago

February 10, 2020

Katie has everything you may have missed from the Oscars last night!

Kobe Bryant was honored in several ways during the show.

  • During Billie Eilish’s performance, Bryant was the first person to appear onscreen.

  • Chicago's own Matthew A. Cherry picked up an award for Hair Love and dedicated his award to Bryant, saying in his acceptance speech, “May we all have a second act as great as his.”
  • Spike Lee wore a purple and gold suit, the same colors as the Lakers, with a 2 and 4 on the jacket lapels.
  • Kobe won an Oscar just 2 years ago for Dear Basketball.

The Oscar's were pretty entertaining last night.

  • Parasite won the top honor and what's cool about it is that it's the first non-English-language movie to win Best Picture in the history of the Academy Awards.
  • Brad Pitt had one of the most talked-about moments of the night when he accepted his award for Once Upon A Time in Hollywood

  • Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for The Joker and went down the rabbit hole pretty quickly during his speech with social issues, including all the prejudices of the film business, ecological devastation, animal rights, and vegetarianism.
    • He also talked about his own perceived personal failings.
  • All the memes created from the Oscars are from when Eminem came out and performed his Oscar winning song, "Lose Yourself."
    • Scorsese actually closed his eyes, took a little nap.

And with good, comes the bad...the Razzies are out!

  • The five nominees for Worst Pictures include CatsThe FanaticA Madea Family Funeral, Rambo: Last Blood, and The Haunting of Sharon Tate, a horror film starring Hilary Duff.
  • Duff was also nominated for Worst Actress for her performance in that movie
  • A Madea Family Funeral is the 12th and reportedly final Madea movie Perry will make.

In Sports:

  • Blackhawks fell short to the Jets 5-2
  • 5th straight loss for the Bulls as they lose to the Sixers 118 to 111
